Monarch Farm: Where good food is grown, and the adventure began

September 30, 2010

After our first week on the road, I have realized how fortunate I was to be involved with a small organic farming operation prior to joining Green Living Project. I already miss all the  fresh veggies. We had to stock the RV up with food and it was the first time I had to go to the grocery store in months. The food, sadly, just wasn’t the same. Fresh, local, organic food is not only healthier for you but it’s healthier for the environment too!

Monarch Farm prides itself on their “ecologically grown” produce, which emphasizes diversity, permaculture and sustainability www.monarchfarmny.com. They utilize inter-cropping, cover-crops and crop rotations to maintain soil integrity, thus enriching mineral quality and ultimately the nutritional value of the food.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) gives members the opportunity to support their local economy and environment. Find a CSA in your neighborhood and get involved. Farmers are always looking for a helping hand. Get your hands dirty and know where your food comes from! Check out the World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms website for more info www.wwoof.org.

We are hoping to volunteer on several farms along our route and we are excited to learn more. We encourage you to stop into your local Farmer’s Market to reduce your carbon footprint by purchasing seasonal produce directly from your farmer. We will be hitting up several markets on our tour, so look for us in your neck of the woods.
