Imagine learning about tropical forest ecosystems while surrounded by the fantastic root systems of coastal mangroves, as scarlet macaws, ospreys, and caracaras soar overhead. Or studying the environmental benefits of shade-grown coffee while the local farmer demonstrates the production process. Or conducting research that will help an underfunded national park improve its management plans to better conserve a threatened ecosystem. All are part of the curriculum at the School for Field Studies (SFS) Center for Sustainable Development Studies in Costa Rica. At SFS students learn by doing and gain both an interdisciplinary understanding of environmental issues and the skills needed to develop effective solutions.
