In 2009, New Mexico launched an EcoTourism initiative, making it the first state in the United States to dedicate funding explicitly for ecotourism—travel that is environmentally and culturally sustainable. EcoNewMexico was chosen to launch the initiative, and they’re working with an array of outfitters, hotels and restaurants to consolidate already-existing ecotourism projects and fostering new ones. Green Living Project traveled to New Mexico to experience some of these projects firsthand. From Taos to Santa Fe to the Pueblo communities, we saw how strong community-wide support has propelled New Mexico to be a pioneer and leader within the sustainable tourism sector.
