Rainforest Alliance

Project Overview

To many people sustainable tourism is synonymous with ecotourism and suggests wildlife viewing or a similar nature-related experience. To Rainforest Alliance, sustainable tourism is a general set of principles that are applicable to any tourism, no matter what the setting. In the colonial city of Granada, Nicaragua, Rainforest Alliance is working with five businesses – four hotels and a tour operator – that demonstrate that an urban setting is no hindrance to sustainable tourism. From recycling and energy conservation to environmental education and community projects, these five businesses are proof that sustainable tourism is not just an admirable concept, it’s good business.
