Project Overview

Answering the question, “What has waste done for you lately?”, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Program managed by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) focuses on community-based urban sustainability projects that put Rwandan garbage to work:  bio-gas facilities that provide sustainable sanitation, slash firewood use while offering an up-close environmental education in resource conservation. GEF has also championed an urban waste repurposing program that supports the harvest of high cellulose waste from city garbage, turning it into highly efficient fuel and exemplifying the ultimate sustainable business: reducing, reusing garbage, creating jobs, offering services and training that empower and improve lives of the marginalized.
