Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Project Overview

Ravaged to the edge of extinction, Rhino Fund Uganda’s operations at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary are an effort to restore Uganda’s wildlife population (with a focus on the rhinoceros) for future generations. A burgeoning ecotourism destination for animal trackers and birders, the predominantly sustainably-powered facility includes a solar perimeter fence enclosing 70 square km sanctuary. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary’s holistic breeding and reintroduction projects include community outreach that provides conservation education and jobs for locals as sanctuary support staff, including the rangers who patrol 24-7 to battle illegal grazing and poaching.
