Chiawa Cultural Village

Project Overview

“Preserving a culture, conserving wildlife”

Africa Wildlife Foundation (AWF) faces down conservation challenges in the Zambezi Heartland (which includes Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique) through conservation with and by the people of Africa for Africa, uniting locally managed enterprise with sustainable ecological policy vital to preserving both land and culture in Africa. In a partnership between conservation organizations (with AWF as a key strategic partner), Lower Zambezi Lodges and the region’s Goba people, the Chiawa Cultural Village was recently launched as a cultural tourism enterprise prototype that empowers local people to benefit directly from the tourism trade generated by the profusion of wildlife in the region, inviting visitors to engage with the traditions, trades, tools, edifices and arts of the Goba people who have lived alongside (and often in conflict with) the wildlife that have made this region famous.

Friend to the elephant, hippo and croc alike, Conservation Lower Zambezi (CLZ) is a research and environmental education center based in Lower Zambezi that battles poaching, habitat encroachment and other resource abuses, assisting ZAWA (Zambia Wildlife Authority) providing field and class studies as well as outreach and sensitization programs within surrounding communities.
